Harvest season puts added pressure on cold storage operations. As product volume increases and storage space fills, receiving, pre-cooling, storage, and shipping all need to keep moving efficiently.

Your forklift fleet plays an important role in that process. Higher utilization, cold temperatures, tight spaces, and limited time for maintenance can increase wear and make unexpected downtime especially disruptive. Here’s what to consider when preparing your cold storage equipment for peak harvest demand.

Operational Demands of Harvest-Season Volume

Cold storage facilities manage throughput year-round, but harvest can bring a significant increase in inbound volume over a short period. Product needs to move efficiently through receiving, grading, palletizing, pre-cooling, storage, picking, and shipping while maintaining appropriate temperature and handling conditions.

Three demands become especially important during peak harvest:

  1. Speed: Product needs to move efficiently from receiving to pre-cooling and storage. Delays can disrupt workflow and make it harder to maintain appropriate product temperatures.
  2. Accuracy and Space: Higher volume can mean denser storage, tighter aisles, and more SKUs or lot codes to manage. Accurate pallet placement and inventory organization become increasingly important as facilities fill.
  3. Uptime: There is less room for unexpected downtime during peak harvest. Planning fleet capacity around peak demand can help prevent a single out-of-service forklift from disrupting the flow of product.

Environmental Stress Factors on Cold Storage Equipment

Forklifts working inside freezers and coolers face mechanical stress even under normal conditions. Cold temperatures can affect hydraulic performance, battery performance, seals, electrical components, and other forklift systems. Moving equipment repeatedly between cold and warmer environments can also create condensation, increasing the importance of equipment designed and maintained for cold storage applications.

Harvest season brings additional stress:

  • Higher Duty Cycles: Equipment may run longer hours during harvest, accelerating normal wear on tires, forks, mast components, hydraulics, and batteries.
  • Frequent Temperature Changes: Moving between receiving areas, pre-cooling spaces, coolers, and freezers can expose equipment to temperature swings and condensation that may affect components over time.
  • Less Time for Maintenance: When every forklift is needed, scheduling routine service can become more difficult. Completing preventive maintenance before harvest can help reduce unexpected service needs during peak demand.
  • More Operator Variability: Seasonal staffing may put additional operators on the fleet. Clear training, pre-shift inspections, and consistent reporting procedures can help operators identify and communicate equipment concerns early.

Together, these factors mean equipment that holds up fine under normal conditions may not hold up as well under harvest-season stress.

Forklift downtime costs more than the repair itself. During peak harvest, an out-of-service truck can affect labor, product movement, shipping schedules, and overall throughput.

The costs of an unplanned forklift outage during harvest include:

  • Labor Costs: An unavailable forklift can leave operators or dock crews waiting and pull maintenance staff away from scheduled work.
  • Product Quality: Delays in moving temperature-sensitive products can make it harder to maintain required handling and storage conditions.
  • Receiving and Shipping Delays: Downtime can slow truck turnaround, receiving, order fulfillment, and outbound shipments.
  • Emergency Repair Costs: Rush parts, overtime, and emergency service can cost more than planned maintenance.

Not all equipment labeled “freezer-rated” is built for the demands of a high-throughput harvest season. Cold storage equipment should be selected around the temperature, workload, operating hours, facility layout, and charging requirements of the application. A few features separate equipment that just survives cold storage from equipment that performs well under harvest-season stress:

  • Cold Storage Capability: Look for equipment and components designed for the temperatures and operating conditions of your facility.
  • Maneuverability: Turning radius, visibility, and precise load handling become especially important as storage density and traffic increase.
  • Serviceability: Equipment that can be diagnosed and serviced efficiently helps minimize downtime when maintenance is required.
  • Scalable Fleet Capacity: A durable core fleet combined with rentals or leases can provide additional capacity during harvest without maintaining peak fleet size year-round.

Prepare Your Forklift Fleet Before Harvest

Harvest readiness goes beyond storage capacity and staffing. Your forklift fleet also needs to be prepared for higher utilization and limited downtime.

Review fleet capacity based on peak-season demand, complete preventive maintenance before volume increases, and identify backup equipment or rental needs ahead of time. Taking these steps early can help reduce disruptions when every truck and every hour count.
